Adaptive Martial Arts Academy

  • I was thinking the other day of why I have a desire to teach Martial Arts. Is it to get more people involved with the art? Is it the fact that I want to be well known by others as a great master or is it the fact that this can yield great profit if I dedicate my whole life to the art?

None of this is true for me because the greatest satisfaction I get from wanting to be a teacher is to see others learn and grow in their own way traveling down this path of martial arts.

Eventually I will move on from this life and the next generation will take over but I want to make sure that while I am able to teach to the best of my ability and pass on knowledge that I may see the same fire that I have in others. This motivates me to give people my greatest treasure of the knowledge and wisdom of what martial arts can do for them.

Martial Arts in itself has a very mystical way of transforming a dedicated person into many great things. Many great known warriors of old were great musicians, scholars and philosophers. The reason behind this phenomena is that in most martial arts there is a great deal of respect, humility and compassion that is represented in how the art should be used otherwise the martial art becomes absolutely useless.

Martial arts continues to teach me many lessons that are very beneficial in day to day life. Things get in the way but how you choose to react or calmly resolve each and every life struggle that can cause you to stumble. These days are very valuable as in a situation in self-defence a great amount of discipline, patients, and courage is required. That is the difference between something becoming a life or death situation to a joyous life changing situation.

I urge those who are reading this to think about why you value or respect the martial art you are in or a martial art you are interested in learning. Is it because it teaches valuable skills, morality, mental and physical discipline or do you just enjoy being a part of something greater than just yourself. I hope you found this post enjoyable and I will be sure to post more in the future.

  • It wasn’t too long ago that I was invited by a higher rank sensei to participate in a black belt training session where we bounced ideas and reflected on the teachings of our betters and things that we have developed along our martial arts journey.

During this time I am not fluent in the specific style that everyone does so it was more of a teaching session for me. This made me realize how naive it is for one person to think that one style is better than the other. That is far from the truth because there was a story I heard of two Karate-ka practitioners who wanted to see which style is better so the two of them faced off. Both were waiting for the other to make a move but neither one did and the fight ended up in a draw. The reason being is that Karate was never meant to be used as a way to fight people; it was an art that relied on defending one’s self.

We must remember that karate begins with a bow and ends with a bow. This always refers to karate starting with courtesy and ending with courtesy. This aspect of karate or any martial art for that matter is what creates bonds between one another from the multiple past generations to the present and from the present to new upcoming generations of martial artists.

  • Introduction

I have gotten to the point in my journey where I think about what makes a warrior and what kind of warrior I want to be. When thinking about it, what does a warrior mean? A warrior is one who is involved in conflict, quarrels, and confusion. Warriors also are defined as one that is brave and has experience in war or battle. When I read where the term warrior derived it makes me think that everyone who has gone through conflict whether it is a physical battle, mental battle or even a spiritual battle. When warriors are faced with confusion it can be many things; it can be about where allegiance lies, who is the enemy, ethic and moral dilemma or facing your inner demons that have afflicted you throughout your life. Warriors that are in the midst of quarrels have to make choices on what needs to be achieved whether to end the situation permanently with force or develop a solution to introduce peace and understanding. In turn of all these things a warrior can be seen as a human that has experiences in many different life struggles and shows great bravery in overcoming all trials no matter the situation. War is not referred to as a physical action, war is a battle that takes a large amount of time, effort, with gains and losses.

Now I want to discuss what makes a warrior? I want to look at history and what the many different civilizations thought warriors were or what it took to become one. I will be taking examples from historical figures from not only race but also cultural, faith, and also huge legends that were used by different civilizations. When I study these things I always get so excited to see what was created as a result of different faith, views, challenges, and also what resources were available during that time.

When we reach the end of what makes a warrior I will touch on the type of warrior I want to become and why it is so important to me in my life. I will also like to hit what key things that would make you the warrior you want to become and what I used to be my compass. I hope that this will give you a look at what compass you will use to guide your journey in becoming the warrior you always wish to be. Remember the end piece is only my own personal view and how I currently navigate my path to becoming a warrior not only for myself but so I can provide guidance and wisdom to my family legacy. I will also be making this blog broken down into parts and titled according to the topic within, “The Warrior’s Path”.

  •         The world is a mysterious and wonderful place when you are young. So many things to explore and so much to learn but where to start. This is where those who choose or were born into the martial arts develop the most important aspects of a child’s growth. They learn coordination, focus and strengthen the body and mind.

I remember being so young when I started learning from my mom. It is an opportunity that most kids do not have. I would have a hard time learning the forms but at three years old you’re not concerned with memorizing forms you want to run, jump, spin, kick and punch. These are the things we look for in young kids to explore their natural given abilities.

We seem to forget who we are as humans. We started with nothing and over the years developed different ways to forage, hunt and defend ourselves in the face of adversity. The most crucial advancements that humans have harped on over the years is the creation of weapons. As time went on the weapons have developed drastically to the point where we pull a trigger and a bullet comes out of the barrel of a gun. Now it doesn’t undermine hand to hand combat rather that it enhances the ability of the user of that weapon in the sense of conserving ammo, the dulling of the blade or even the damage that weapon accumulates over the course of battle.

Now in times of uncertainty of what will happen in the world we live in. We can try to understand when to run and when to fight and we can learn from other great masters that most have a common view that martial arts is not used for combat but is the art of peace. The reason why I share this view is a famous saying that martial arts start and end with courtesy. I will be honest the only time I have had a real fight was when I was young and naive. I went looking for a fight and found one where a true martial artist learns to have self-awareness. This doesn’t mean just awareness of your surroundings but to have the confidence knowing that you can avoid a situation or escape without being harmed or harming others.

The one major thing that I came to realize is how much more I need to learn and develop. On that note I would like to expose the illusion that young martial artists will not understand. That belt color doesn’t represent skill, it is a system that was developed to gauge how sturdy and smooth the foundation of the style you’re trained in. Once you have your foundation that is when you start learning and developing your martial art aka black belt.
